Needle Exchange Program
Prior to our presentation, I was not previously aware about there being any needle programs within this area of Maine. It was an interesting experience learning about the resources that they provide for the area. In terms of similar programs, I originally was under the impression that their main focus was on properly disposing used needles, then giving out sterile ones. However, I did not previously understand that there is more that goes into the program. The primary basis of the needle exchange program is to optimize safety among a population that is discriminated highly within our area. Not only do they provide sterile and proper supplies for needle users, they also utilize their local resources to provide low cost care to their participants. This presentation has changed my existing beliefs by showing the differences that are made by prioritizing safety. Although the concerns of IV/needle drug abuse is still prevalent within the community, they are utilizing the best of their abilities in that situation by providing this population with everything that they need to optimize their safety.
I understand how controlling the amount of drugs provided on the streets within our population is most likely not going to slow down anytime soon. Taking away their drugs will do no effect because they will still find ways to get their fix. However, I believe when we take a step back, we could decrease drug use in this population by increasing mental health dedicated opportunities within our area. By dedicating our time towards mental health and wellbeing, at least a small portion of our future populations will be able to work through their pasts and emotions, rather than searching for other ways to fix them. I want to make it clear that not all needle drug users are using these drugs to avoid their mental health status. However, there are some who may. If we are able to put a priority on mental health, at least a small portion of this population could find other ways to reduce stress. Regardless of its a small or large number, it still indicates a positive improvement.
I will utilize the information from this presentation in my future career by placing a high focus on treating everybody as an equal. There are many disparities within the healthcare where healthcare workers look down on needle drug users for being “less than” human. These people are the same as us regardless of drug use, and in fact need extra care provided towards them to allow them to want to find help if drug complications occur. If we turn this population away, we will be facing many more health concerns within the community. Overall, the healthcare system should utilize the same goals as the needle exchange program by prioritizing safety over judgement. Therefore, those are the standards that I will live by in my future practice.
